Process

From tree to bean

Four steps, nearly all of them in the hands of the farming families we work with. That is how a natural, fine-aroma cacao comes together.

Freshly harvested cacao pods in shades of red, orange and yellow.
01

The harvest

Growers cut the pods by hand, one at a time, once each one has properly ripened.

02

Fermenting and drying

The beans ferment for several days in wooden boxes, then dry in the sun. More than any other step, this is where the aroma is decided.

03

The roast

We roast each batch low and slow, just enough to wake the aroma without burying where it came from. Prefer it raw? We sell it unroasted too.

04

The bean

What comes out is a fine-aroma bean, clean and whole, ready for your cup or for making chocolate.

Two forms of the same bean.

Natural cacao grown by Colombian farming families. No sugar, no additives, no colourings. Take it raw or roasted.

Bags of Cacaua roasted cacao beans on rustic wood, surrounded by fresh pods.

Roasted beans, whole, nothing else.

It tastes like pure chocolate: bitter, intense, with nothing dressing it up. Whole beans, hand-sorted and slow-roasted in their own husk.

Snack

Peel and eat as they are. Pure cacao, no sugar. Magnesium and antioxidants.

Infusion

Crush, steep in hot water for 5 minutes and strain. Gentle, nothing like coffee.

Our very first customer

"The packaging is lovely and the roast is spot on. They are so good as a healthy snack."

This started between friends!

Cacaua grew out of a group of friends who love good cacao and decided to take it more seriously. We buy straight from farming families in Antioquia and the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta who grow it naturally: we pay a fair price and keep only the cacao we would drink at home. Behind it is me, Roger, plus the farm people doing the work up in the mountains.

Frequently asked

What people usually ask us

Do you ship anywhere in Colombia?

Yes. We ship across the country by carrier. Shipping is paid by the buyer and the cost depends on your city or destination. We sort it out over WhatsApp before dispatch.

What is the difference between raw and roasted beans?

Both come from the same natural fine-aroma cacao grown by Colombian farming families. The raw beans are fermented and sun-dried, never roasted: ideal for homemade chocolate, cacao drinks, or roasting to your own taste. The roasted beans go through our slow roast and keep their husk: enjoy them as a snack or as an infusion.

How do you eat it?

Depends on the bean. Roasted: peel and eat them as they are, or crush them and steep in hot water for about 5 minutes for a gentle infusion, with a lift quite unlike coffee. Raw beans are for preparing: grind them for a cacao drink or homemade chocolate, or roast them at home to your taste.

Do the beans contain sugar or additives?

No. These are whole, natural cacao beans grown by Colombian farming families. No sugar, no additives, no colourings.

How should I store them?

In a well-sealed container somewhere cool and dry. The roasted beans hold their aroma for months; the raw ones keep very well too, as long as moisture stays out.

How do I place an order?

Message us on WhatsApp with the bean you want, raw or roasted, and the size: 100 g, 250 g or 500 g. Orders are arranged over WhatsApp. Shipping is paid by the buyer and the cost depends on your city.

The buyer pays for shipping. The cost depends on your city or destination; we confirm it over WhatsApp when arranging the order, before dispatch.

Do you sell wholesale or by volume?

Yes. For chocolate makers, bakeries, shops or any business, message us on WhatsApp with the bean and the weight you need. We quote you straight from the same source.
